Outgoing United States President Joe Biden is undermining the “peaceful path” taken by President-elect Donald Trump to solve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to the Russian government.
Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov put forward this claim during an interview on Russian television. According to him, the outgoing Democratic administration is sabotaging the Republican president-elect’s plans to bring an end to the conflict.
“During the [U.S. presidential] election campaign, Trump talked about wanting to make peace in some way and was leading down a peaceful path,” Peskov said. “And now, [the Democrats] are doing everything they can to escalate the situation in such a way that peace agreements are doomed to failure.”
The Kremlin spokesman’s comments followed Biden granting Kyiv permission to use long-range Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) munitions from the U.S. against military targets in Russia, alongside promising to waive some of Ukraine’s debts. According to Peskov, the Democratic Party wanted to use this to limit Trump and take revenge for the defeat of its nominee, outgoing U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris. The Russian official ultimately pointed out that the outgoing Democratic administration “will do everything to ensure that this war does not end.”
On Nov. 17, Biden gave the green light for Kyiv to use the ATACMS against Moscow. It marked a shift in policy for Washington, which had previously banned Ukraine from using the missiles against targets on Russian soil. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted to the news with restraint. “Strikes are not made with words,” he said during a video address on the night of Nov. 17. “Such things are not announced; the missiles will speak for themselves.”
Trump, who is set to take office on Jan. 20, 2025, has previously reiterated his intent to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict as soon as possible. But he has not yet announced any precise plans to bring the conflict, which has been going on for more than 1,000 days, to a peaceful end.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha dismissed Moscow’s use of a new medium-range missile against Ukraine and threats of further attacks as “typical blackmail.” He remarked in a post on the X platform, formerly Twitter, that Russian President Vladimir Putin is trying to deter anyone from supporting Kyiv.
“Ukraine’s partners should do the exact opposite: Reject blackmail, increase support and strengthen Ukraine’s air shield with systems capable of intercepting such missiles,” wrote Sybiha, who replaced his predecessor Dmytro Kuleba in early September.
Russian officials said Moscow’s new Oreshnik missile was fired at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Thursday, Nov. 21. The missile targeted a defense plant in the city, located in the country’s eastern region.
Shortly after the Thursday missile strike, Putin announced the serial production of the new missile – claimed to be the only one of its type in the world. Moscow claims that the Oreshnik missile flies at hypersonic speed and cannot be intercepted by air defense systems. This information could not initially be confirmed independently, however.
The Ukrainian Air Force said days later on Sunday, Nov. 24, that Russia attacked Ukraine overnight with dozens of combat drones. It added that 50 out of Russia’s 73 drones were shot down, with almost 20 drones being stopped by electronic countermeasures.
Air raid sirens in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv sounded for more than three hours during the night. The city’s military administration later wrote on the Telegram messaging app that more than 10 drones targeting Kyiv were intercepted.
The Russian Ministry of Defense meanwhile reported that more than 30 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight. Over at Russia’s Kursk region, its governor said two missiles and 27 drones were intercepted over its airspace. However, no information was provided on any damage the drone attacks caused.
